One at Marquette: Jillian Ogren
Jillian Ogren greets Mashuda Hall residents with a smile and a warm welcome.
Even during her five-hour Sunday night shift, Ogren makes sure to interact with each visitor while she works as a desk receptionist. "They're so so nice to me," Ogren said of the Mashuda residents. As Ogren said this, a resident interrupted her. “Hey, Jillian!” said the man. “Hey! How are you?” Ogren asked. Ogren makes an effort to talk to every passerby. She even attempts to learn their names, even though over 400 students reside in Mashuda. “Miller,” a student checking out said to Ogren. “I was actually going to guess Miller, and I don’t say that to everybody,” she said. Ogren never stopped smiling during her shift Sunday night. She cut strips of paper to make each student in her student teaching class a Spanish study aid during lulls in the lobby. Majoring in Spanish and education keeps Ogren busy, but she said she can not wait to be a teacher. In May she will graduate with certification to teach Spanish in grades K-12. She said although it is extra work, she enjoyed making the aids to help her students learn. Ogren sees some interesting outfits working in a campus dorm. Connor Doyle, a sophomore in the College of Arts & Sciences and a Mashuda resident, entered the lobby in a “Where’s Waldo” costume – complete with a striped hat. “Can I ask why you’re wearing that?” Ogren asked. “No you may not,” Doyle said. Ogren laughed and shook her head. These encounters are typical at her job. Residents notice her presence and work at Mashuda. Lizzy Owen, a resident assistant, presented Ogren with homemade cupcakes in honor of Ogren’s birthday, which was only hours away. “Shut the front door. No way,” Ogren said. She thanked Owen for the thought and went back to work with an even larger smile on her face. |
